Accomplishments & Confessions

I'll start with the accomplishments first...

At exactly 1 month and 2 days old Beau started skipping his every 2-3 hour feedings during the night.  It has been so nice!  His last feeding for the night is between 9 and 10pm and he sleeps until 3 or 4am.  He then eats and goes back to sleep until 6 or 7am.

On the sleeping note, he also has been sleeping by himself for naps.  I owe it all to The Happiest Baby on the Block and the 5 S's.  I read the book before he was born and wasn't that impressed with it.  Most people recommended watching the DVD.  We rented the DVD from the hospital and I have to say the DVD is much better.  You can see exactly how the doctor soothes the babies and how fast it works.  Now Beau almost prefers sleeping by himself on his side.  You have to get the angle just right and it's like a switch.  He falls to sleep almost instantly.

Beau now smiles at us.  He smiled like crazy when we were down at my parents house because of all the attention he was getting.  He was so cute!  Still have yet to capture it on camera though.

On to the confessions...

I went to the hospital to pick some stuff up and Beau was getting a little fussy.  It was close to feeding time so I got him out of his carseat and sat in a comfortable chair to feed him.  I burped him and just sat him back down in the carseat while we continued walking through the hospital.  We left and went straight home and when I lifted the blanket to get him out of the carseat once we were inside I saw I had never buckled him in!!  He was chilling in his carseat unbuckled while I drove home.  I can't believe I did that.  Luckily, we didn't get in an accident.  I just hope that doesn't slip my mind again.

We had an appointment for Beau the other day and while we were waiting to be called he pooped.  I went into the bathroom to change him and soon realized that it was a major blow out.  It seemed that most of the poo went out of the diaper instead of in.  I was prepared with an extra outfit so I started the changing process.  I was wiping him off when I heard them call his name.  Travis was there and told them I was changing him.  He came into the bathroom to tell me they were ready and saw what I was dealing with.  He quickly started helping me.  Finally, we thought we had cleaned him off and went back to see the doctor.  While Beau was laying on the table, naked except for his diaper, I started seeing spots of poo that we appearantly had missed.  Travis and I both felt like bad parents because he still had poo all over him.  We will quadruple check next time to make sure we get it all.

1 Month

Where does the time go?  I can't believe it has been a month already.  Here's what I've learned and experienced throughout this month.  Motherhood is not what I expected.  Some things are easier than I thought and some things are harder.

You must take precautions everytime you change a boy.  We learned that the hard way.  We were still in the hospital, when in the middle of the night Travis and I were both changing Beau's diaper.  He had his circ. earlier that day and diaper changing went smoother when both of us were helping.  We were scrambling to try and change him fast when he started peeing all over himself.  Unfortunately, he was pointed up and he shot himself in the face.  We are pretty sure he nailed himself in the eye and mouth and all over his onesie.  He was already crying from the act of getting his diaper changed and started screaming bloody murder after he pee'd himself in the face.  Travis and I get pee'd on occasionally too.

I was a hot mess after we got home from the hospital.  So emotional.  I would cry at the drop of a hat and had major anxiety.  The crying and anxiety have gotten better thankfully.

I am only pumping and not nursing.  I love the freedom of having bottles and Travis being able to feed him, but not the pumping sessions.  I think I would go crazy if I had to get up every night with him to nurse.  I get up with him on the weeknights and Travis gets up with him on the weekends.  I highly recommend it.  I enjoy my two nights a week of sleep.

Beau loves his paci, but isn't addicted to it.  Hopefully that will mean he won't mind when I take it away for good.

Beau is still learning that he doesn't have to be held to take a nap.  He sleeps fine by himself at night, however, he won't sleep longer than 10-20 minutes by himself during the day unless someone is holding him.  I can't get anything done, but sleep myself, work one handed on the compter or watch tv.  I love holding him, but I do need a shower every once in awhile and taking one when Travis gets home isn't ideal for me.  I haven't been too worried since he's so young.  You can't expect much from someone who's only a few weeks old.  Although, the last two days we've discovered swaddling him super tight and propping him on his side has enabled him to sleep soundly for hour stretches.  I hope that keeps working and gets better.

Our BabyBjorn has been my life saver.  Having a baby that only wants to be held, the Bjorn is a must if you want to get anything done.  Beau contently hangs out while I get ready for church and while I do the dishes.  Travis loves using it too while doing things around the apartment.  Beau even helped Travis make my birthday cake the other day.

Tummy time is our favorite.  I love laying him on my stomach and watching him lift his head to look around.  He always has the cutest expressions and such a strong neck.

Beau loves walks.  He'll be fussy and as soon as we walk outside he quiets right down.  He even knows when the walk is over and sometimes when we pull up to the door he'll start crying again.  Sorry, I can only walk so much.
Happy one month Beau!  May you have many more.

The Curious Case of Beau's Finger

Beau has the cutest, little (and by little, I actually mean big) hands.  Nothing about this guy is little, but that's a post for another time.  We've noticed something interesting about Beau's hands, or should I say finger.  He likes to extend his pointer finger of his left hand.  I'm sure that doesn't seem that odd, but we've found it in the most curious of locations. It has a mind of it's own.

Here it is during my photo shoot with him today.

Here is the finger making him look like he's contemplating life's big questions.

This one is my favorite.  Look carefully-it's sneaking out of his tightly wrapped snuggie and Beau's little smirk is priceless.

My parents and brother came into town last weekend to help us celebrate our birthdays.  I think the real reason was to see Beau, but anyway...

We went to our favorite burger place for dinner where we were able to watch the BYU v. Utah game on one of their tvs.  The finger makes an appropriate appearance.
