I Heart New York

Angie, Amanda, Cheryl and I took a girls trip to New York. We left Thursday evening and arrived in Harlem NY around midnight. We stayed with Angie's brother-in-law and his roommate. They were both very nice for letting four girls stay in their apartment. They lived in Harlem and their apartment building looked like something out of a gangster movie complete with a bullet hole through a window in the stairwell. The apartment itself was really nice and decorated really well. The first morning we awoke up at 5 am to catch a taping of Live with Regis and Kelly. Amazingly four girls got ready and figured out how to get downtown by subway with time to spare. As we were rounding the corner of their building we were told that they were doing a rerun. I guess we should have figured that out before we left, but oh well. We headed over to the Today show instead and on the way passed the Temple.

From there we decided to try our luck at finding knock-off purses in China Town. On the famous Canal Street we were led behind secret doors, into basements, and up flights of stairs (7 to be exact) all in the name of finding the perfect knock-off purse. I have never seen so many purses before in my life! And a little word of advise-you may not want to wear flip flops unless you want your feet black.

After spending a few hours there we grabbed some lunch (which served as our dinner too) in a cute part of town called Greenwich Village. For dessert we waited 20 minutes in line for a famous cupcake at Magnolia's Bakery. They were good, but I doubt I will ever go there again.

After dessert we wanted to see where the Twin Towers were. There was a lot of construction for the new tower they are building but there was an emotional memorial set up there. Everyone, and I mean even Amanda, cried a little when we read the time line, saw the pictures of the devastation and recalled some of our memories. When we were done we headed to Time Square to see the city at night.

Saturday we definitely got up later than the morning before. We had lunch at Ellen's Stardust Diner where the waiters and waitresses take turns singing Broadway songs. They really put on a good show. They almost make you forget you are spending 12 dollars on a hamburger by having so much fun watching them. After that wonderful experience Amanda, Cheryl and I went to see Wicked while Angie shopped in Macy's. The show was great and I would love to see it again if I have the chance. P.S. don't read the book, period, because it is nothing like the show and isn't good at all.

On our way to meet Angie we stepped into the Hershey Store. It was a chocolate lover's paradise. There were these ginormous Hershey Syrup bottles that I wish were actually filled with chocolate, but they were just banks. After working up an appetite in Macy's we met Angie's brother-in-law at a restaurant called Cafeteria. Apparently you had to be gay to work there because everyone was. Unfortunately they didn't provide us with very good service, but at least the food was good.
We then went on the Stanton Island ferry to see the city skyline at night and get a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty. We talked to a guy on the ferry who lives on Stanton Island and commutes to the city everyday for work. He had some interesting things to say about the city and told us he was waiting for the ferry when he saw the planes crash into the World Trade Towers. He said no one went to work for weeks and the whole city shut down.

Our final day in New York we decided to go back into the city and walk around Central Park. But before we did Amanda and I got Subway and Angie and Cheryl went to Starbucks. Amanda and I met up with the girls in Starbucks where they were having breakfast with Renee Zellweger! Well, not really. But she was sitting at the table right next to us and we could hear what her and her friends were talking about. Even though we totally wanted a picture with her or an autograph we decided to play it cool and not bother her. After walking through some of Central Park we headed back to pack up our things and say goodbye to Angie's brother-in-law. I had a great time and can't wait till I can do it again!
